Home cooking workshop participants learning practical kitchen skills
Porterpick Workshops

Programs built around the kitchen.

Each workshop at Porterpick starts with a real problem — a dish that never quite works, a technique that feels uncertain, an ingredient you've avoided buying. Pick a program, show up ready to cook, and leave with something you can actually repeat at home.

What we measure

Numbers that tell the real story

12+ distinct recipes practiced across all programs, not just demonstrated
4–8 participants per group — small enough that every question gets answered
3 core skill areas covered per session: knife work, heat control, seasoning

Cooking is mostly a series of small decisions made under mild pressure — and that is exactly what the workshops practice.

Porterpick's programs are structured around the moments where home cooks usually get stuck. Not the recipe itself, but the gap between reading a step and executing it when the pan is already hot. Each session builds that gap-closing muscle through repetition and feedback in real time.

The Middelburg community has shaped what these workshops look like. Participants bring specific questions, local ingredients, and real kitchens with real constraints. The curriculum reflects that — no commercial kitchen assumptions, no equipment lists that require a specialty shop. Explore our approach and tools to see how sessions are structured.

How a session actually works.

Three hours, one kitchen, a small group. Here is the shape of every Porterpick workshop from arrival to the moment you leave with a full plate.

1

Setup and context

Arrive, handle the ingredients, and hear the reasoning behind the day's focus. Not a lecture — more like a conversation about what tends to go wrong and why.

2

Guided practice

Cook alongside the facilitator with your own station. Questions happen in the moment, not after. Mistakes get corrected while the pan is still on the heat.

3

Eat and debrief

Sit down with what you made. Talk through what worked, what you'd adjust, and what to try at home the following week without a facilitator nearby.
